As per the survey of the worldwide Corruption Perceptions Index or the CPI, India gets the rank of 74 which is two steps down as compared to last year. The index had been calculated amongst 180 countries in the world and had been done by Transparency International which is an independent agency and functions at international levels. The news of this downfall has had no affect in the global market as more and more international investors are selecting India as a growing prospect for trade and commerce.
But the survey has also shown that India’s neighbour, Pakistan, gets the 140th place which is a very high corruption rate. Below Pakistan is neighbouring country of Nepal and Iran and Libya which are ranked at 135, 134 and 133 respectively. China had joined India at rank 72 for the year 2007 but this year China also went down one place in the list and got a place above India.
The other Asian countries were still ranked much below India with Russia getting the 145th position and the island of Sri Lanka getting the 96th position. Maldives got the rank 90 in the index. Of all the neighbours of India and other countries in the region is Bhutan which has given the 41st position. The TI is a non government organisation that has been tracking the commonness of corruption through out the world.
The top five spots in the corruption index were given to Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand, Singapore and Finland. They have continued to retain their positions as the least corrupted nations of the world. The most corrupted nations that are at the bottom of the index are Somalia and Myanmar. Some of the biggest and the most powerful countries in the world also fared well in the index. U.S.A retained the 20th rank in the list. United States comes below the countries of Germany, France, Ireland and Japan. Great Britain got the 13th spot and was just ahead of Hong Kong.
This survey has been done on annual basis by the Corruption Perceptions Index. As for India it has come a long way from the 88 in the year 2005 and the figures had dropped drastically for the year 2006 when it came down to 70 out of 163 nations. The slight fluctuation in the ranking has been mainly due to more countries becoming a part of the survey and thus there may not actually have been a rise in corruption. But with its rapid economic growth India has to aim for reducing corruption levels further.
